#RoadtoCACUSS 2017 is a wellness journey that will culminate in Student Affairs Professionals from across the country cycling from Toronto to Ottawa to attend the annual Canadian Association of College and University Student Services conference. The bike trip begins on June 4, 2017 but the journey will start long before that as participants train, prepare, and gear up for the adventure.

Hello #RoadtoCACUSS participants & supporters!

To ground the challenge of participating in #RoadtoCACUSS: The Ride, we are inviting you to participate in exercises that are designed to help you manage challenges and cultivate your well-being. Whether on the bike ride or following along from the office or at home, this is an opportunity to approach a challenge and cultivate the ability to thrive within a supportive community!

Your first step will be to identify a personal and/or professional challenge you are experiencing and would like to transform. Our intention is invite you to participate in activities that support reflection and encourage you to take action steps towards transforming those challenges by June 2017. These exercises are connected to the work of researcher and leader in positive psychology, Dr. Martin Seligman, and his model of flourishing, also known as PERMA-V.

PERMA-V represents dimensions and elements that contribute to one’s overall psychological well-being and happiness. These dimensions are: Positivity, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievements, and Vitality. Each week, we will explore an aspect of PERMA-V to anchor the #RoadtoCACUSS experience.

The Okanagan Charter for Healthy Campuses

In 2015, thought leaders from across Canada came together to write the Okanagan Charter for Healthy Campuses. This document communicates a vision for healthy Canadian campuses, and has two main calls to action:

  1. Embed health into all aspects of campus culture, across the administration, operations, and academic mandates.
  2. Lead health promotion and action collaboration locally and globally.

This charter calls us—student affairs professionals on campuses across Canada—to consider our wellness and and how we collectively model well-being to our students. This challenge provides an opportunity for you to reflect and develop your own sense of thriving.

#ThriveRU—Holistic Health and You

We intend for #RoadtoCACUSS to be an experience where you practice aspects of thriving, resulting in you having a lived example of a time where you were successful at working through a challenge.

To support this, there will be weekly activities designed to support your connection to each aspect of PERMA-V. These exercises have been generated by Dr. Diana Brecher at Ryerson University as part of the #ThriveRU initiative. While these exercises were designed to help students, we believe they will help ground the #RoadtoCACUSS experience.

While going through the weekly exercises, we will ask you to connect the activity to components of Segilman’s PERMA-V (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, Vitality) model. To connect this experience to your professional development, we will also ask you to reflect on how your learning relates to the development of at least one CACUSS competency. To help you track your progress, we’ve created this worksheet. We hope that this integration of thriving can be applied in all areas of your life, and can serve as a model to colleagues and students of how thriving can lead to well-being and fulfillment.

To measure how the model and exercises impact your thriving, you will be asked to participate in a brief questionnaire based on the short form of the Mental Health Continuum (MHF-SF). (The MHF-SF is derived from the long form (MHC-LF); its measures of social and psychological well-being have been validated and used in hundreds of studies over the past two decades.)

We’re asking everyone to complete this questionnaire; we’ll ask for your consent on the form as to whether or not we can use and share this data in our CACUSS presentation. To measure how the model and exercises impact your growth, you will be asked to participate in the following:

  • Pre-assessment: To measure what you understand and practice regarding thriving.
  • Reflective activities: To develop your understanding and practice of thriving skills.
  • Post-assessment: To describe how the completion of this experience will affect your own personal development, and professional practice.
